Gundam Creator Yoshiyuki Tomino Awarded Order of the Rising Sun
In the Japanese government's Spring Conferment of Decorations announced on April 29, Yoshiyuki Tomino, the original creator and general director of the anime series Mobile Suit Gundam, has been awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon. The honor was reported by NHK and other domestic media outlets.
The Order of the Rising Sun, which Tomino received on this occasion, is conferred upon individuals "who have rendered distinguished service to the state or public," with particular attention to "those who have achieved notable accomplishments." In the field of entertainment, manga artist Machiko Satonaka, known for works including Aries no Otome-tachi, also received the same decoration.
Tomino joined Mushi Production in 1964, later going independent to direct series such as Triton of the Sea and Invincible Super Man Zanbot 3. His 1979 series Mobile Suit Gundam is widely acclaimed for ushering in a new era of robot anime through its richly developed worldview, human drama, and realistic portrayal of warfare.
According to reports, Tomino commented on receiving the decoration: "I am very happy that they took notice of me and chose to honor me, as I am fundamentally someone who works behind the scenes." He also expressed a wish to convey to young people that "you can work in anime even if you can't draw," revealing his hopes for the emergence of new talent in the next generation.
The presentation ceremonies for this year's Spring Conferment of Decorations are scheduled to begin on May 12.
