Purdue for Cal Poly for Engineering

My son got into Cal Poly Mech Eng and Purdue FYE and is trying to decide between the two. We are full pay OOS at both and told him we will cover the cost up to Purdue. He has a small scholarship to Cal Poly so the delta is $13k per year. He likes the direct admit of CP and California weather. But he will need to work or get some loans to cover the addt’l cost of CP (he applied to their college corps program which is a $10k work-study program).

He also likes the California weather and it is close to home (we are in AZ). But we think Purdue has bigger name recognition and will help him for going to graduate school (MBA). At my work (FAANG) I know multiple Purdue grads, but I have never met a CP grad.

He is worried about the difficulty of Purdue, the having to compete for ME, and the location/winter. But I think he underestimates the difficulty of trying to earn $13k a year while gojng to college. What do you all think?
