safety concerns around uni location

I got an offer from City and Guilds London Art school for a foundation year but I'm concerned about the area it's located in. I'm from relatively small city compared to London and the crime rates are basically 0, so I have no experience living in big cities with high crime rates. The art school itself is located in Kennington (Lambeth borough) and I've heard all sorts of things about this borough/location which is making me doubt accepting my offer, I heard about a recent stabbing at the subway there. Is it safe for international students? What are the chances of serious crime happening on my way to the school (on the subway)
