My friend made jokes about her husband wetting himself and when it made me uncomfortable, she got defensive.
I'm not sure how to talk about this really, but I (24F) met my friend (24F) around a month ago. We got close fast and she'll sometimes say things that make me go "eh" but I overlooked them because we had so much in common. Last night she sent me a few messages about how she just had the worst day, the message went as follows "we got a flat tire, we forgot the wallet, then the pump didn't work, then one of us (I won't say who) pissed himself" I was immediately taken back by the message and tried to play it off like I didn't know she was talking about her husband. I began showing empathy towards the situation by saying "so you wet yourself? That's really rough and I understand how embarrassing that must've been for you" she responded with "LMAOOOO" and clarified it was her husband (25M) who experienced the incontinence. I straight up told her it wasn't funny and asked if her husband knew she was telling me about it, to which she replied "I don't think he would care" to which I responded "K, well I hope you both have a good night at least" and then I immediately went to the other room and told my husband (26M) what happened. He reacted the same way I did and said "Well if you needed a reason not to be friends with them, there you go" We had a discussion about how messed up it is to make jokes like that about your own partner, and stated we wouldn't do it to each other, and then I went to bed. When I woke up this morning I saw that she had responded to my last message with "? You good? I think there's been a miscommunication here bc I'm confused" and I was immediately upset about that response so I (in retrospect I shouldn't have responded so hastily) respond with "Yeah I think there was definitely a miscommunication because it seemed to me like your husband wet himself and you were making jokes about it to one of your friends" should I not have responded like that?
Mainly: Should I not have been uncomfortable with her joking about that? and Should I apologize and attempt to stay friends despite this?
