Am I being underpaid/overworked as a nanny?
feel like I’m doing two jobs and getting paid for one. I make $22/hour, and I’m a full-time nanny for a toddler in a completely screen-free household - so when she’s awake, I’m “on” 100% of the time. No breaks, no quick resets, constant engagement. - and she is in terrible 2s, having tantrums every other second everyday.
The part that’s getting to me is during her nap. The second I put her down, I’m expected to switch into housekeeper mode. I have a list of cleaning tasks every day—vacuuming areas we don’t use, dusting, disinfecting, general house cleaning that has nothing to do with the child.
I don’t get to just sit down and take a break unless I finish all the tasks. If I rush, I can maybe get 45–50 minutes to have some time to reset and eat my lunch.
I understand cleaning up after the child -that’s part of the job. But this feels like I’m being hired as both a nanny and a housekeeper without the pay reflecting that.
Is this actually normal, or am I being taken advantage of?
