My (26F) roommate (28F) is over sensitive and I feel like I’m walking on eggshells around her
I moved into a great new apartment 3 months ago with my new roommate who I hadn’t known prior. I want to preface by saying that I have a rlly good deal on my apartment in a very desirable neighborhood and I’m very grateful for it. But onto the issue, my roommate is very sensitive to the point that I cannot say simple things like “pls walk slower” when we’re on a walk without her exploding. Everything I say can be perceived as a slight towards her even if it doesn’t involve her. An example of this is that I was leaving to go to my boyfriends for the evening and when I said bye to her, she got defensive and asked if I was leaving because of her. How would that involve her in any way? And then I had to console her that she’s a nice roommate and I was in fact just leaving because I wanted to spend time with my boyfriend.
I think she’s going through a tough time in her personal life but she seems very emotionally deregulated in a way that terrifies me. Today she was screaming and crying over the phone in the living room and ended up somehow taking it out on me when I was being on edge after getting out of the shower.
What would be the best way to try and resolve conflict with someone like her? I have tried to talk to her calmly but she takes everything very personally and internalizes a lot. I have gotten the vibe that she doesn’t have a support system or a good family life so any conversation where she has to take accountability turns into a trauma dump. At this point, I just want to make the living situation comfortable for myself while I ride out the remaining few months on the lease
