What are some essential parts of history that people need to know to understand current issues?

I'm fed up with people defending history they don't even know. I'm going to write a book which clearly explains how different concepts evolved through history, like germ theory and vaccines, race and eugenics, industrial revolution and environmentalism, and class inequality and capitalism. What are some other areas of history you'd want the average person to know for today?
