[Polish > English] Two unknown Polish words in a Yiddish letter
I'm translating some old letters from Yiddish, from someone in Poland in 1936, writing to a relative in America. Two words come up that I don't recognize, and I'm wondering if they're Polish words, place names, and/or people.
- Shviatshn (or perhaps Shviotshn, שװיאטשן)
- Huas (or maybe Huos, Hias, Hios, or Hoas, הואס/היאס) - this one always appears in quotation marks.
Context: The writer is talking about having to go to the Consulate in Warsaw to submit documents (perhaps relating to immigration or sending money, but it's not clear), and there has been a repeated issue with the documents.
The lines in question, doing my best to put the words into the English sentences (there are still some gaps due to poor handwriting, so I tried my best to make them make sense):
'My sister in America submitted the document, and for it I needed to travel to Warsaw [and] Shviatshn. I didn't have any money to travel to the consulate, so I asked her to send a few dollars"
"They told me the papers were invalid, and I immediately went to Warsaw, and went to "Huas". I was told that if I go to Shviatshn and submit the document, I'll get nothing; they said to me that if I submit through them (i.e. through "Huas"), they'll do their best to get the money for me"
My guess is that Shviatshn is another city, and that Huas is a person's name, but I'm really unsure. The writer lives in Janow Podlaski, if that helps at all. Thanks in advance!
