Voice-searching Chinese words by describing them in English — does anyone actually do this?
I had a moment yesterday where I wanted the Chinese for
"a place packed with people." I knew it was a 4-character
idiom (turned out to be 人山人海), but:
- I didn't know the pinyin, so I couldn't start typing it
- Typing "place packed with people" into Pleco gave me
single-word results, not the idiom
- I almost asked ChatGPT but felt silly opening a chatbot
for one word
What I instinctively wanted was to just *say* out loud
"how do you say 'a place packed with people' in Chinese"
and get back 人山人海 with audio + characters — the way
you'd ask a friend.
So my honest question, narrowed down:
-
Does anyone here actually voice-search Chinese
vocabulary like this today? Which app / workflow?
-
For heritage speakers: when you know the meaning
but not the pinyin, is voice your default, or do you
still type the English meaning into a dictionary?
-
Or is this a non-problem — typing + ChatGPT is fast
enough and voice would just be a gimmick?
Not asking which app is best — trying to figure out
whether "describe out loud → get the Chinese back" is
a real workflow people use, or just something that
*sounds* useful but nobody actually does.
