Apartment Cleanliness Issue

Location | Renting :table:

Hello! I recently moved into a new unit in the same building (same landlord) and while my previous unit was amazing, this one is extremely filthy and feels like a major downgrade despite being more expensive. It smells strongly of incense, the kitchen was extremely unsanitary (appliances filthy, hair, grease and food particles all over the floor), some damages to the walls (a hole in plaster, dirt and stickiness all over the place) and the bathroom is also filthy (mildew everywhere, drips of brown fluids coming down the walls, etc). I documented some of the situation with photos, but I’ve been hesitant on informing my landlord because while I’ve always had a cordial relationship with him, I’m a bit anxious to raise complaints. I obviously had to start cleaning it once I moved in, because I needed to move my belongings out of my old unit and didn’t want to take them into the dirty apartment. Should I even bother saying anything to him about the issues? I can send you photos privately if you would like to tell me whether I’m being over dramatic or it really is unacceptable condition. I feel like I should be given compensation for the state of the apartment, but I’m a bit scared to ask. Thanks for advice.
