AIO - I effed up a situationship that could’ve turned into something good
I (F43) met this guy (M45) on tinder. Let’s call him “Tony”. We met about a little longer than 2 weeks ago for a beer for our first date and ended up going back to his hotel room that night. Tony is from out of state and was here for work. He’s also a single parent with sole custody of his kids. I have mine 50/50. Prior to us meeting, he was very upfront and honest about not being able to be in a relationship due to his work traveling every week, and he goes home to spend the weekend with his kids, to leave again the following Sunday or Monday to a new destination. Back to the first date, to say the night was amazing is an understatement. I had been single for over 1 year and previously dated someone who wasn’t good in bed. We were both “in need” for a night like that. Fast forward, we continue to text each other, sporadically, very sporadically, but everyday. He would send me a picture or a video of his working site, and I would send him selfies, good mornings and good nights, checking how his day was going, emoji kisses etc. there wasn’t much of depth on the texts and we didn’t talk on the phone at all. But there was a lot of caring quick texts pretty much everyday. Today he asked me if I had plans for the night, and I said it was my custody day, but that I would be free tomorrow. He said he was heading home and wondering if he should stop here to see me. I live no where on his way home, this man was wondering if he should come 5 hrs out of his way to see me. We haven’t seen each other since our first date because he wasn’t assigned to come where I lived the past couple of weeks and next week he’s also going elsewhere. I then suggested he could come over and spend the night at a hotel, and I could meet him as soon as my sons were back with their father in the morning, we could spend Friday together and he could leave early Saturday. He said he preferred to just drive directly home so he could see his kids. I got very disappointed in that. Initially sent him a passive aggressive thumbs up. Then wrote a paragraph. Saying that I was backing out of this, that I was grateful for the time we had but I respected his decision to be with his kids. But truthfully I was feeling a little hurt. I’m in no position to compete with kids, I would not want to put myself on that same position, I know better. So I shook it off. He replied asking why and saying he was disappointed as well because he was looking forward to seeing me again. I said I was too, but that I needed consistency and he wasn’t in a position to offer that. I know, it’s been ONLY two weeks :( I ended the texts by saying that he knew where to find me if he wanted this, he replied with a thumbs up.
Am I overreacting for wanting to put a stop on this? I know myself and I’ve done a lot of work to stop accepting the bare minimum, be more vocal about my desires; and I felt I was starting to develop feelings for him and was afraid of hurting myself again. I talked to a friend and she said I overreacted because it had only been 2 weeks. But that I shouldn’t contact him back. I keep wanting to send and apologize for what I said, but at the same time, I said what I needed to say instead of just “going with his flow” and burying it as I always done in previous relationships and felt like I was always begging for crumbs.
