Xion: The scrutiny from she from back then.

This is something that has been bothering me for some time and I know what I'm about to ask is like opening up an old wound but I need to say it. Why did she faced so much scrutiny back then and how is she now compared to back then? I'll be honest, this is coming from a modern KH fan perspective but I really don't understand why and I also think she didn't deserve that kind of unwarranted scrutiny.
