Wisdom & Might

"Daniel answered and said, 'Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, for wisdom and might are His.'" (Daniel 2:20)

Men have sought wisdom throughout the ages, "always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth" (2 Tim 3:7). Others love great power. Nebuchadnezzar said, "Is not this great Babylon that I have built for a royal dwelling by my mighty power and for the honor of my majesty?"

And then history tells us that Alexander wept because there were no more worlds to conquer, and our world has one rich man after another who cannot bring himself to decide, "It is enough."

Their problem is that their search for power and wisdom is in all the wrong places, and they will never be satisfied. All wisdom and might belong to God alone, and he distributes it to whom He pleases for His purposes.

In our Lord Jesus Christ "are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge" (Col 2:3), and He acknowledged that "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth" (Matt 28:18).

As revealed in Christ, our Almighty God is both omniscient and omnipotent, and true wisdom and lasting riches will come only from Him.

Now, "if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God... and it will be given him" (James 1:5). When we need strength, we can learn from what Paul revealed: "For when I am weak, then I am strong" (2 Cor 12:10).

How can we fail when our strength rests in the hands of the Almighty God?

Daniel gave his statement in today's text to the most powerful monarch on Earth, who had access to all the wisdom of the most highly educated men of the age. But human power and human wisdom couldn't satisfy his need.

However, Daniel, drawing from the wisdom and power of our Creator, God, could meet his need. Even today, God's servants have this same privilege and responsibility because our God is "forever and ever."

For us to receive "the true riches" Christ can supply, we must be found "faithful in what is least" (Luke 16:10-11). Let us desire an excellent blessing, "For what is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God" (v. 15).
