TD-17 Gen 1 owner (7 years) considering upgrade to used VAD507 - talk me into or out of it

Hey r/edrums,

Looking for honest opinions from people who’ve been in a similar spot.

My situation:

Bought a TD-17 (Gen 1) in 2018 to get back into drumming. Life kept getting in the way — roommates, apartments, noise concerns. Finally own a house with a dedicated basement space. No excuses anymore.

The kit has Lemon cymbals (2 crashes, 2 piece hi hat and an 18” ride) added. The ride bell doesn’t trigger reliably and I’ve had general triggering frustration across the kit. Haven’t done a deep dive on the settings yet — planning to this week.

I play seldomly right now, mostly because the kit frustrates me when I sit down. Whether that’s the equipment or a habit problem, I’m genuinely not sure.

The opportunity:

Found a used VAD507 at Long & McQuade — single owner, purchased 2023. They’re offering $1,000 on my TD-17 trade-in, net cost to me would be $4,000 CAD. I love how the VAD507 looks and feels.

My questions for the community:

  1. For people who’ve gone from a TD-17 to a VAD507 (or similar VAD series) — did it actually change how often you play, or was it just a more expensive kit that sat unused?

  2. Is the TD-17’s triggering with third-party Lemon cymbals fixable through settings, or is it a fundamental compatibility limitation?

  3. At $4,000 CAD net for a 2-year-old single-owner VAD507, is that a fair deal or am I overpaying given the VAD516 just launched with the newer V51 module?

  4. Anyone regret making this kind of upgrade? Or regret NOT making it?

Trying to be honest with myself about whether this is a gear problem or a discipline problem. Appreciate any real talk.
