Why do embedded systems still rely so much on C instead of modern languages?

I’m a beginner trying to get into embedded systems (aiming for roles like firmware/embedded engineer), and I’ve noticed that almost everything still revolves around C.

But with modern languages like C++, Rust, or even MicroPython offering better safety and abstraction, why is C still dominant?

Is it mainly because of:

direct hardware control?

memory constraints?

legacy codebases?

or something else I’m missing?

Also, for someone starting in 2026, would you recommend sticking fully with C first or learning something like Rust alongside it?

Would really appreciate insights from experienced devs 🙏
