living alone made me notice every tiny broken sound in my apartment

one thing nobody warned me about living alone is how loud small broken things become.

not loud loud. more like the tiny click of a loose cabinet. the little wobble in a desk when you lean on it. the towel bar that shifts half an inch every time you grab a towel. the picture frame that rattles when the door closes.

when i lived with other people, that stuff blended into the background. now it feels like the apartment is quietly tattling on me every night.

for a while i just ignored it. part of me was still waiting for someone else to eventually notice and fix it. then i realized that if i wanted the cabinet to stop clicking, i had to be the person who fixed the cabinet.

i bought a hoto pixeldrive screwdriver after stripping one tiny screw with a terrible old screwdriver. it’s not for serious projects. it’s just the thing i reach for when something in the apartment starts making that ‘you should deal with me’ sound.

the first fix took maybe 40 seconds, which somehow made me feel more adult than paying a bill.

what’s the small noise in your place that you keep pretending not to hear?
