iPhone 16 Pro Max overheating and chemical smell
I’m trying to see if anyone else has had this happen with an iPhone 16 Pro Max.
I’m on iOS 26.3.1, and my back glass is cracked. Lately the phone has been getting extremely hot during normal use, like Instagram, iCloud backup, or recording video. Sometimes it gets so hot that I can’t even touch it comfortably.
The weirdest part is that there’s a chemical smell coming from the cracked back glass area. The best way I can describe it is like nail polish / nail salon smell. There’s also a slight burning smell, almost like an ironing board or hot electronics smell.
When it crashes, it doesn’t fully reboot like normal. The screen goes to that loading icon/spinning wheel, not the progress bar, and then it comes back to the lock screen like normal. After that, all my app permissions get messed up, like Photos, Camera, Microphone, etc. Then I have to do a force restart to get my permissions working again.
It has done that twice already, and today it has crashed about three times total.
I checked the analytics logs and I keep seeing watchdog crashes. The logs mention SpringBoard not responding and getting terminated after missing the heartbeat/check-in window. I’ve seen watchdog timeout stuff around 60–120 seconds, and thermal pressure showed moderate at the time of the crash. Battery health is at 86% with 509 cycles. I’m also not able to finish a backup because the phone gets too hot and ends up crashing.
Has anyone had this happen before?
