Approaching girls in public - acceptable or nah?

Saw a post on here about daygame, so thought I'd pipe up.

I'm interested in the concept of approaching girls in public, but concerned it could blow up quite spectacularly in my face.

What should you watch out for before you start approaching girls in public in order to avoid embarassement / cringe / kick in the balls?
