I got laid off as a Ruby on Rails developer and now I’m confused between frontend and backend — what should I do?
Hey everyone,
I could really use some grounded advice right now.
I joined a company as a Ruby on Rails developer. After training, I worked across multiple projects, but my experience feels very scattered:
- Project A: ~70% HTML/CSS/JS, ~30% Rails
- Project B: Almost entirely frontend (HTML/CSS/JS)
- Project C: Very small Rails API work
- Project D: ~60% Rails, ~40% Svelte (with frontend work)
- Project E (current/last): Flutter (mostly UI/design)
Now I’ve been laid off.
The problem is:
I don’t feel confident in Rails (backend)
I also don’t feel confident in frontend, even though I’ve done a lot of it
Right now:
- Rails market seems smaller (especially in India)
- I’m learning React and I’d rate myself ~6/10
My goal: Get a job in 1–2 months.
I’m stuck between:
- Going all-in on Rails/backend and strengthening fundamentals
- Switching to frontend (React) since I already have some base and market demand is higher
I feel like I’ve done “a bit of everything but mastered nothing,” and that’s hurting my confidence.
Would really appreciate:
- What would you do in my position?
- Which path gives faster employability in 1–2 months?
- How do I fix this “jack of all trades, master of none” situation quickly?
Thanks in advance 🙏
