What if Navalny had become President of Russia in the 2010s instead of Putin? How would global politics and the economy have shifted?

Let’s say Alexei Navalny actually managed to come to power in the 2010s, replacing Putin through some combination of political momentum, protests, and institutional support. What kind of Russia would we have ended up with?

On the surface, Navalny was known for his anti-corruption stance and criticism of the ruling elite. So I imagine an early priority of his presidency would have been internal restructuring: targeting oligarch networks, pushing transparency, and trying to weaken the entrenched power structures that defined the Putin era.

But I keep wondering how far that could realistically go without triggering internal resistance. Would the security apparatus (FSB, military leadership, regional governors) have allowed deep reform, or would we see a softer version of continuity dressed in reformist language?

Then there’s foreign policy. This is where things get really interesting.

If Russia under Navalny had pursued a less confrontational stance toward Europe and the US, would we have seen:

  • A less intense breakdown in Russia–EU relations?
  • No Crimea annexation in 2014, or at least a very different trajectory?
  • A completely different NATO posture in Eastern Europe?

And if energy markets weren’t destabilized the same way, would Europe’s long-term energy transition have accelerated or slowed down?

Another angle I can’t stop thinking about is internal legitimacy. Putin’s system relied heavily on stability narratives and centralized control. Navalny’s legitimacy, at least initially, might have depended more on reform promises and public trust. That feels like a much more fragile foundation in a country of Russia’s size and complexity.

Globally, I also wonder whether China–Russia relations would have evolved differently. If Russia had shifted closer to the West even slightly, would China have become even more strategically isolated, or would Russia have tried to balance both sides more carefully?

And economically, would foreign investment have flowed into Russia in a meaningful way, or would institutional risk still have kept capital away despite political change?
