I lied during airport security and let someone else take the blame

A few months ago I was traveling for work and running late for my flight. The airport was packed, security lines were insane, and everyone was stressed.

When I got to the front, I realized I had completely forgotten I left a small item in my bag that I wasn’t supposed to have. Nothing dangerous, but definitely something that would get me pulled aside and make me miss my flight.

The guy behind me in line was distracted, fumbling with his stuff, and when my bag got flagged… I didn’t say anything.

Security started questioning him instead.

He kept saying it wasn’t his, that he didn’t know how it got there, and I just stood there quietly, acting confused like everyone else.

They pulled him aside, and I walked through.

I caught my flight.

I’ve thought about that moment way more than I expected to. He didn’t look angry... just confused and stressed. And I knew exactly why.

I justified it at the time by telling myself I “had no choice” and “it wasn’t a big deal,” but the truth is I chose myself over someone who did nothing wrong.

I don’t even know what happened to him after that.

And the worst part? If I was in his position, I’d be furious.

I still feel guilty about it.

Would you have done the same thing in that situation?
