Close uni friendship slowly fading + group dynamic shift should I say something or let it go?
Hi, I’m in third year of uni and I live with a girl I was really close to in first and second year. There hasn’t been a big fight or fallout, but this year the closeness has just… faded.
We used to initiate plans with each other, talk properly about our days, invite each other to important things, etc. Now it feels much more like flatmate energy than close-friend energy.
Some context:
I feel like I initiate most plans and deeper conversations.
When I share details about my day, she gives more surface-level updates.
She hasn’t really invited me to things that matter to her (e.g. a play she’s doing), even though I’ve invited her to important events of mine in the past.
She does initiate with other people, so it doesn’t feel like she’s just “not an initiator” generally.
We didn’t really keep in touch much over summer, and the dynamic never fully bounced back.
On top of that, our wider friend group has shifted this year. Some guys have become more integrated into the group. At a recent party, a few of them behaved immaturely and made misogynistic jokes. They apologised, but it felt brushed off quickly. I already don’t hang out with them outside bigger group events, but the vibe change has made me feel more disconnected from the group overall.
We still get along fine. We’ll chat normally, sometimes it feels like old times, and we still say “I love you.” But overall, I feel like I’m putting in more energy and I can’t tell if I’m overthinking it because we live together and proximity amplifies everything.
Part of me wants to have a calm conversation with her before we move out, just to clear the air and say I’ve felt a bit disconnected. Another part of me wonders if this is just a normal friendship resizing and I should let it be.
Would you have a conversation? Or let it naturally settle?
TL;DR: Close uni friendship with my flatmate has gradually faded this year (no fight, just less mutual effort). Group dynamic has also shifted in a way that makes me feel more disconnected. Not sure whether to have a conversation before we move out or just accept the drift.
