Could something other than my disc drive laser being bad cause the drive to not read DVDs?

I replaced the disc drive in my CECHA01 about a month ago because my original drive would not read DVDs anymore. I got a refurbished drive from a seller that had cleaned a drive and installed a new laser. It read CDs, DVDs, and BDs all just fine. I haven't tried a game or DVD movie again until today, and now it won't read DVDs. Can something else in my PS3 cause it to not read DVDs. Seems odd that it worked and now doesn't work in such a short time.

The seller offers a 6-month warranty. So I'm reaching out about options. They put a warranty sticker on it, so can't try cleaning it until I hear back about a replacement drive.
