buying advice for a first car?
wsg guys, my dad and i are trying to get a manual car for the both of us. i finished my lessons a few months ago and i'm on a learner permit, so we’re focusing on 2016 or newer models with 1.0L engines to keep the insurance down. for reliability we're trying to go for Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai or maybe Volkswagen depending on the milage.
i've done a LOT of homework and created a red flag checklist for when we go to viewings. i'd love to know if i've missed anything.
checklist:
- no wet belts (avoiding the Ford EcoBoost/PSA engines known for failing). 😤
- clocking: cross-referencing the NCT report mileage history against the odometer.
- head gasket: checking for creamy gunk under the oil cap. (blown head gasket, €1000 - €2500+ repair)
- transmission: spongy clutch or a very high bite point (clutch wear, €500 - €1000 repair). 5. body: checking for structural rust (NCT failure) and uneven panel gaps (signs of a crash). 6. inspecting tyre tread depth and ensuring no warning lights are on the dash.
any advice on what else to look for during a test drive or viewing would be hugely appreciated! thanks a million! :-)
