Issues with Marine Portrayals - No Technical Advisor Available?

SpoilerFAM - Season 5

I'm seriously beginning to question about how much effort the writing team is putting into doing any background research or continuity building this season. The portrayal of the Marines had irked me, but this most recent episode really helped me figure out why this has bothered me so much.

  1. The timing: Jarrett is said to be 18 years old at the time of the season, but is wearing the rank of Corporal (E-4), which typically takes 18-24 months to achieve. Further, in episode 6, we see Haskell make his appearance in uniform. According to the wiki, "No Sudden Moves" takes place on July 23rd, 2012. Haskell left for MCRD in early June, and Marines Corps boot camp is 13 weeks long. Following on after that, School of Infantry is another 14 weeks before any additional follow-on training. It seems that OPEF training is a separate MOS, and therefore would be additional training after SOI. So, we wouldn't see Marcus Haskell doing that training before December of 2012 at the earliest, and he wouldn't even finish boot camp until September at the earliest.
  2. Uniforms: Marines would DEFINITELY not be out drinking in downtown Oceanside (or Jacksonville, or San Luis Obispo) in their Service Class C uniforms. Also, the ribbons they're wearing are the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terror medal. We were wearing those medals in real life in 2012 because of, you know, the wars we were fighting. In this alternate timeline, with no Gulf War I, no 9/11, no creation of Al Quaeda because no Russian invasion of Afghanistan, it seems there are no active wars the US has engaged in, or would've been engaged in, according to the news stories and pieces during the flash forward sequence.
  3. Rank and responsibilities: as I mentioned before, Jarrett is wearing the uniform of a Corporal - the lowest rank of noncommissioned officer in the Corps, and kind of a big deal. There's no way in hell even a drunk Lance Corporal would screw with an NCO like that, nor would a Corporal EVER start a fight with a junior like that in public- especially if they wanted to keep their rank. Also, Jarrett would've been leading her squad in the CQB exercise that we saw portrayed as part of the OPEF training drill in that episode- and she would've stood up for Haskell pointing out about the bad seal on the space suit helmet (we'll come back to that in a moment).
  4. Fight Like You Train, Train Like You Fight: When Haskell pointed out that one of the squad had a bad seal on their helmet, first off the ranking NCO should've caught that first, second off the rest of the squad would've been checking each others' gear before beginning the exercise. Finally, the senior NCO/ officer (it wasn't quite clear) would've absolutely had them do it again, the right way instead of the collective punishment of a 10k run; things that can and kill people in very gruesome ways in the military are absolutely scrutinized and practiced until they're second-nature.

Just a few things I noticed, as a former sailor who spent way too much time around our "special" younger siblings within the Department of the Navy.

I hope the writing and background attention to detail gets better next season- it's been incredibly disappointing seeing the noticeable drop in quality this season.
