Chats getting bogged down and slow. Is there an auto delete setting anywhere?

My chats get bogged down from people that join and never say anything or people that never reply to a message. They are weeks old and I have to go in and manually delete every one of them to keep the current chats running smooth. I can't find a setting for auto delete messages anywhere.

How do you guys handle that?
