Visit Karlovy Vary
Hey everyone—I'm new to Reddit and new to this sub. I only recently fell down the Kane Pixels Backrooms rabbit hole, and yeah… I’m kind of obsessed. I’m still catching up on the lore, so sorry in advance if this has already been talked to death. I tried searching “Karlovy Vary” here and in a few other places, but I couldn’t find anything that really connects it to the city—which feels like it might actually matter.
Quick context: Karlovy Vary is a famous spa town (one of the biggest in Europe). It has a bunch of hot springs, and the hottest one is Vřídlo. Geology-wise, it sits in the Eger Graben, which is a tectonically active zone in western Bohemia.
Here’s where it gets kinda wild: one of the tourist things you can do in Karlovy Vary is go underground to see the Vřídlo hot spring system—basically a huge network of tunnels. The official tourist sites even hype it up with stuff like “rare bacteria and algae that thrive on surfaces washed by hot spring water.” And apparently you can walk through it all… as long as you don’t mind the nonstop industrial noise from the old machinery running the place. Check this out:
The “mysterious Karlovy Vary underground” tour is about two hours long. And it’s not just the thermal tunnels—part of it also goes under the Church of St. Mary Magdalene, where you can see what’s left of the burial crypts.
Also: apparently Karlovy Vary’s underground had a whole alchemy vibe back in the day. Like, an alchemical “marriage” of water and fire. Some alchemists thought the super-hot water coming out of Vřídlo was basically evidence of Sulfur Philosophorum (Philosophers’ Sulfur) burning deep underground. And the water being rich in aragonite? That was supposedly linked to “turning things to stone”—basically petrifying whatever you put in it.
Now tie that back to the lore: Ivan Beck was born in Karlovy Vary, and it’s pretty safe to assume he spent time in Prague too. So maybe he went to the Petřín Mirror Maze (Zrcadlové bludiště) when he was younger. A mirror maze is basically an “infinite space” simulator—endless reflections, warped versions of you, funhouse mirrors, the whole deal. And mazes in general are kind of perfect as a metaphor for getting lost in your own head (subconscious, identity, etc.). Alchemists were into mirrors too—they treated them like thresholds, like portals to a “mirror” dimension.
That’s a lot for Ivan to carry with him to the US. Your birthplace sticks with you—especially if you end up doing extradimensional research and messing around with time.
People have already talked a lot about the Complex, the Standard, and the idea that Ivan’s mind is basically some kind of bridge between them.
So here’s my thought: in 1989 Async opens the Threshold and we get the Loma Prieta earthquake. If Ivan was experimenting with KV31 throughout the 1980s (multiple attempts to open it), then this jumped out at me: on December 21, 1985, there was a major earthquake recorded in Czechoslovakia, with the epicenter near Nový Kostel—about 43 km from Karlovy Vary. And between December 1985 and January 1986, that whole Vogtland/West Bohemia focal area had an earthquake swarm with more than 8,000 events.
So… is it crazy to think that, through the Complex, Ivan’s mind is nudging reality? Like some kind of synchronicity thing (which is funny, because “A-Sync” sounds like the opposite of synchronicity). And speaking of synchronicity, here’s the part that really got me: in 2006, Karlovy Vary opened a new tourist attraction near the Diana Observation Tower. Guess what it was. A mirror maze. In Karlovy Vary. Is the Complex trying to say something, or is it straight-up taking control of reality?
