Escape Clause is a little more complicated than it seems

Episode Discussion

In Escape Clause (season 1, episode 6), Walter Bedeker wants to be immortal. A fellow named Mr. Cadwallader appears to make a bargain: one soul for immortality. At first, the deal seems like it's basically going Mr. Bedeker's way. He is assured by Mr. Cadwallader that there are no hidden clauses or conditions. Then, Mr. Bedeker asks about his appearance. Cadwallader assures him that he will look basically the same.

Mr. Bedeker is not satisfied with this answer, saying he doesn't want to look like a dried up prune in 500 years. Cadwallder says he drives a hard bargain and adds another part to the deal: any aging that does happen will be imperceptible!

I think it was actually that second condition that fucked Mr. Bedeker in the end. It assured that he wouldn't age enough for it to be perceptible. Thus the plot unfolds as it does and Mr. Bedeker is facing down "life" in prison, which he finds untenable, thus taking the escape clause.

That's my hypothesis. It's just not quite as simple as it seems. The episode frames it as being the drive for immortality alone that gets Mr. Bedeker in the end, but I think it was the vanity that really did the deed.

Thoughts?
