I feel like my boyfriend is still emotionally attached to his ex — how do I bring this up?

venting/ranting

I’m a 25F and I’ve been dating this guy (26M) for about two months. He was the one who showed interest in me first.

Early on, he told me he’s still friends with his ex. I didn’t really like that, but I chose to move forward with him anyway. They were together for two years, and she broke up with him because she didn’t want a romantic relationship anymore, and also because he works a lot and wasn’t able to give her as much time as she wanted.

He told me that if she hadn’t broken up with him, he would’ve stayed with her. But he also said that if she asked to get back together now, he would say no because he wants to be with me.

They still hang out, and when they do it’s always alone. They also Snapchat each other and (I assume) text pretty regularly. I don’t go through his phone, so I don’t know exactly how much they talk now.

She has also asked to meet me, which I find kind of weird, and it makes me feel like they might be talking about me.

The issue is… I can’t shake this feeling that he’s still waiting for her to want him back. I get a weird gut feeling whenever I’m around him, and lately he’s been acting a little off.

I’ve had a lot of toxic relationships in the past, so I’m trying to be careful not to overreact. He’s honestly the first guy who’s treated me well, and I do think he’s a good person. But I also struggle with communication, and he’s not great at regulating his emotions either.

How do I bring this up without it turning into a fight or sounding accusatory? Am I overthinking this, or does this situation sound like a red flag?
