volume control settings values...patterned after the old numbers, where there was no pattern
i was discussing with a family member something that i do that i always thought was completely normal, but apparently not...
when i am watching TV, listening to the stereo, playing video games, or anything that requires a numerical settings value for the volume; i find that the value that the volume has to be set based on one of the following rules (these are order dependent, such that if not one, then it has to be the next rule; if not that, then the following rule; etc)
- prime number
- a square or cube of 3
- a square or cube of 4
- a multiple of 5
if the volume is not set to one of these values, i tend to obsess over the fact that this is not set properly, and i try to set it appropriately. i even find that i will tolerate slightly too loud or too quiet if the number lands on one of these rules.
i love patterns, and i am interested in the patterns that numbers make. one of the fascinating aspects of prime numbers is that there is not really a pattern to them, which is itself something of a pattern...almost the pattern that remains when other patterns are removed.
the family member i was discussing this with looked at me like i had grown a third head (as opposed to just the 2). does anyone else do this? i don't normally seek validation, but i have spent several weeks thinking about why i do this, and why i even care about it...and i do not have an answer that makes sense...other than i like number patterns (and patterns in general).
