Washington ZC clock help.

I recently got the Washington ZC expansion. When I tried to assemble the clock, I couldn't get the two small black pieces to fit together no matter how hard I tried, so I tried joining them with nothing else in between, just to test it. That way I was able to join them, but now I can't separate them again. Is there any way to separate them, or once they're joined they can't be separated?
