Circle of Days
This is a little different take for this sub.
Circle of Days is a recent book by Ken Follett. It's not his best work but it's still a fun read.
It's a fictional story about Neolithic Britain and the construction of Stonehenge. Four times a year, at each equinox and solstice , people travel long distances to the monument for a ceremony celebrating the change in season. Of course while they are there people trade. In addition the night after the ceremony it's socially acceptable for anyone to have sex with anyone else regardless of marriage status... as long long as both people are consenting. Of course there is no way to prove who the father is so all children are raised the same as any other children. They see this as a way to add genetic diversity to small isolated communities. They see the benefits of genetic diversity in their livestock and believe it's beneficial for humans as well.
I've been reading Ken Follett for a long time and have long believed he is a horny old guy but this book really proves it.
