There's black paint???

I'm working on a MAM in shapez 2. I put in all the work to get the crystals going. I dialed in my machine and optimized the crap out of it--maybe spent 5 hours in all.

Then I turn it on and walk away from my computer. I come back and it has only done 8 levels before needing BLACK PAINT???

I played thru shapez 1, shapez 2 (pre 1.0) and now shapez 2 and only now realized that there is such thing as black paint??? Why was this not covered in any of the milestones?
