AITAH for giving up on a friend?

Hello, all.

Ive been watching videos about this sub on smosh and kmk for a long time, so i figured id give it a shot with one of my own experiences and see what you guys think.

I (32m) gave upon my friend (31m) who i had been friends with for over 20 years.

I met this friend (we'll call him jamie) when I was maybe 7 or 8. Both of our older brothers were friends also.

Growing up i was closer to Jamie than I was my own brother, since my older brother was a bully and I got the brunt of that abuse.

We hung out constantly, got into crazy shit, came up with batshit schemes, went to concerts, road trips, drove fast cars, the usual dumb guy stuff that people do growing up.

A consistent thing with Jamie was his identity issues.

He couldn't decide who he wanted to be, and this usually ended with going through multiple jobs, pushing away friends, family and relationships, and giving up on parts of his life that he was genuinely good at.

At one point he got into music, became an extremely talented musician, and then gave it up because he wasnt immediately popular in the music scene.

He started a business at one point, which he then shuttered shortly after because it wasnt making money fast enough, even though it had only been a month or two.

He was given multiple opportunities for work, relationships, activities, etc. when the going got tough, he would promptly give up, blame everyone around him for its failure, Then drink his life away in response.

I understand that life is different for everyone. my point is that he threw away so many good things in his life because of his own decisions, and refused to take responsibility.

I spent 20 years trying to be supportive of Jamie, and regardless of what I tried to do or say, it was his way or no way.

The constant negativity started rubbing off, and my own life took some bad turns. After 20 years, I just couldn't do it anymore. I couldn't watch somone in cared about who had so much potential in life, completely throw it all away while drinking themselves to death in a self imposed pool of self pity.

we haven't spoken in a number of years. I genuinely cared about my best friend. I just couldn't watch him destroy himself anymore.

AITAH?
