AITAH for ending a friendship because they ruined my birthday?
For context: It was my 16th birthday, the day before I had decided to take a break from social media because it was really starting to affect me. One of my friends ask me why and I responded “so I don’t wanna kms bcus these ppl pmo”. She started to worry so I explained to her that I was fine a just needed a break so as to avoid such thoughts.
The next day, it’s my birthday, I dressed up real nice, did my hair and makeup and everything. I tried to put a smile on my face because my mom had one request of me that day; to make happy memories.
First thing in the morning, I get called down to the office. My friend had spiralled and told our entire friend group I was going to kms, and one of them reported me. They were going to call my mom and tell her I was a potential risk to myself. I broke down sobbing, and it was like my whole world was collapsing. I mean who would want their mother to know they’re mentally unstable, on their birthday? And what mother would want to be told their kid was at risk of sending themself to heaven, on their birthday same day they gave birth to them?
I was torn apart, and in I guess a fit of rage, ended my friendship with everyone in the friend group associated. I couldn’t stop crying and ended up text my mom to take me home. As soon as I got home, I was berated with text messages asking me to talk things out, but how could I? Especially right away. They forced me to pick up their calls, threatening that if I don’t they’d report me as a risk to myself again. I couldn’t speak up over my sobs, I could only listen to them defend themselves, not understanding my point of view. After 2 years of friendship, the only gift they’ve ever given me was a bundle of tears.
They expressed their worry for me after I started distancing myself and started talking less, even I had a valid reason for each. I distanced myself because one of them had an ED and decided to project it onto me. I also used to have an ED once upon a time, but have been working through it, recently developing a healthy relationship with food. It didn’t help that she would comment on what and how much I ate though. And I knew it wasn’t good for me, but I also knew she was still trying to recover and that I should be patient with her, so I decided to distance myself instead. As for talking, one of my friends disclosed to me that I sound condescending when I talk, so I talked less. And they knew that. Yet still decided to ruin my special day.
After a few days, I calmed down and apologized, asking for their forgiveness and their friendship again. Each one of them rejected me, saying I was selfish, and was treating them like toys, that I’m better off finding new friends. (Keep in mind, I was never included in anything concerning the friend group, one of them would go behind my back and tell people I like to sleep around, one of them dropped me and everyone else as a friend last year for months without reason and treated them like crap; whereas I did for 2 days and had a reason, and one of them would fat shame me. I realize now that I never want to be friends with them again, but they’re acting like I wronged THEM??) And I’ve kind of just been treated like a villain ever since. So, AITAH?
