Metasploit Wrap-Up 05/01/2026
A critical Linux Local Privilege Escalation (LPE) vulnerability, CVE-2026-31431 dubbed "Copy Fail," has been disclosed with a public Proof-of-Concept, allowing attackers to elevate privileges through a flaw in cryptographic APIs. Metasploit Framework has rapidly shipped a local exploit module for it.
Technical Breakdown:
- Vulnerability: CVE-2026-31431, known as "Copy Fail." This is a logic flaw within the cryptographic APIs exposed by the Linux Kernel.
- Impact: Enables local privilege escalation (LPE).
- Exploitation: Details and a public PoC were released. Metasploit Framework's new exploit module leverages this flaw.
- Affected Targets: The Metasploit exploit currently targets AMD64 and AARCH64 architectures, with support for additional platforms planned.
- TTPs: T1068 (Exploitation for Privilege Escalation) via a local exploit.
Defense:
- Patching: Immediately apply available kernel updates to remediate CVE-2026-31431.
- Monitoring: Implement robust logging and monitoring for anomalous process behavior or unauthorized privilege changes on Linux systems.
Metasploit Framework Updates: Separately, Metasploit Framework now includes the Model Context Protocol (MCP) server (msfmcpd). This new feature allows AI applications (like Claude or custom agents) to query Metasploit data (modules, hosts, services, vulnerabilities) via a read-only middleware layer. Future releases are planned to expand this to include module execution and session interaction.
