Getting Quebec Driver's License

I filled out the necessary form to get an appointment to have my US license recognized and obtain my Quebec license. However, I have read some posts with accounts of people just walking into the SAAQ without an appointment and being served. It sounds too easy to me, but if it's worth a shot, I'll take it. I was just curious if anyone else had tried and succeeded--or if that was just a thing of the past. Thank you.
