NOAA DAFS aviation icing/turbulence forecasts API

I added NOAA DAFS support to GribStream.

DAFS is NOAA/NCEP’s newer short-range aviation guidance product family for turbulence and in-flight icing. It is not a general weather model like GFS/HRRR/RAP; it is specifically meant for aviation hazard guidance.

The new GribStream datasets are:

  • dafsgtg — Graphical Turbulence Guidance over CONUS
  • dafsificonus — In-Flight Icing over CONUS
  • dafsifiak — In-Flight Icing over Alaska

The useful part is that these can now be queried through the same API shape as the rest of GribStream, instead of dealing directly with GRIB files, NOMADS paths, inventories, byte ranges, projection handling, etc.

Typical use cases would be things like:

  • route screening
  • dispatch dashboards
  • aviation weather apps
  • internal flight-planning tools
  • icing/turbulence hazard overlays by altitude

The products are short-range: GTG is available from analysis/current conditions through 18h, while IFI is available from 1h through 18h.

I wrote up the details here:

Curious if anyone building aviation/weather tooling has been working with DAFS directly yet, and whether you are getting it from NOMADS, NOAA S3, or somewhere else.
