Kids Kids Kids
I've been in the field and worked with kids (4yo+) for about 4yrs now. I've done a handful of play therapy workshops and trainings and have read various books on working with kids. For the most part, it's a great time! We build rapport for a bit, we play, do the work, and I carve out time to do psychoed or suggest interventions for home with the parents/guardians. However, I've recently gotten a few kids on my caseload that I am really struggling with. Angry outbursts at school and home, not following directions, being disrespectful to others, harming others, and all sorts of things. Even damaging items in my office and hurting me 🥲 This isn't anything I haven't encountered or worked with before but I am at a loss with these particular kiddos. Any attempt at building rapport or addressing behavior is shut down or quickly erased as the session continues. I've consulted with colleagues and even people in adjacent professions (OT). I just really don't know what to do. I find myself dreading the days I see these particular clients but I want to challenge myself and learn how to work with these kids, because I know they're capable of change. I try to be cool, understanding, empathetic, and fun. My main goal when working with kids is to be at the very least a positive adult figure in their life. I don't have children of my own yet but when I interact with these kids I worry about not knowing how to handle or correct it in my own eventual life. I don't know where I am going with this. I just had a rough session (not the worst though) and I don't want to do these kids a disservice. Any advice, paths to take, or words of encouragement would be helpful 🫶
