Sudden AdSense spike (CTR ~20%) → likely auto ads issue? Anyone seen this?
Hey,
I’m trying to figure out something weird with AdSense over the last few days.
Normally my site does:
- ~6–7k impressions/day
- ~100–120 clicks
- ~€10–15 revenue
- CTR in a normal range
Then suddenly (2 days):
- impressions ~10k
- clicks jumped to 300–370
- CTR went up to ~19–21%
- revenue €47–54
Traffic did increase a bit (from ~500 to ~770 users), but nothing that explains a 3x jump in clicks.
What’s interesting:
- no new major referrers (mostly “direct / keyword not defined”)
- user behavior looks normal (avg ~2.9 pages / ~110 sec)
- no obvious bot patterns
After digging, I noticed on mobile:
- an auto ad (anchor) slides up from the bottom
- it overlaps content and can be clicked accidentally
I disabled ads after that, and everything immediately dropped back to normal (~€14 / ~110 clicks).
So it looks like:
→ auto ads causing accidental clicks (not real engagement)
Questions:
- Have you seen CTR jump to ~20% from auto ads?
- Did Google later adjust earnings / flag anything?
- Do you fully disable anchor/interstitial ads on tool-type sites?
I’m leaning toward turning off fixed + aggressive formats completely, but curious if others ran into the same situation.
Thanks.
