Lakers trade Luka for Jokic

If the Lakers are serious about winning right now, Jokic is the better player to build around. Simple as that.

Start with this. The age argument is overblown. Jokic is only a year older than Giannis, and nobody is acting like Giannis is out of his prime or on a short clock. So acting like Jokic is somehow past his window does not hold up.

Now look at fit.

Jokic does not need a system built around him. He is the system. You plug him in and instantly have one of the most efficient offenses in the league. Everyone eats. Everyone gets easier shots. Role players look better than they actually are.

That matters when you already have pieces like a 27 year old Austin Reaves, who thrives off ball movement, spacing, and smart playmaking. Jokic maximizes players like that immediately.

Luka is elite, but he is ball dominant. Everything runs through him. That means roster construction has to be perfect or it can get clunky fast.

With Jokic, it is the opposite.

He raises the floor of everyone around him without needing to control every possession.

Then there is consistency and control of the game. Jokic dictates pace, slows things down, and picks defenses apart possession by possession. That style translates in the playoffs every year.
