To pick or not to pic ?

tbh ive started singing in front of people and my guitar skills have always just been basic , when i play without the pick it’s easier to palm mute and control using my thumb and my first finger and thumb together in the choruses or to be louder , is this a crutch and when i start using a pick it just sounds messy and brittle ,
