20 y/o in Brooklyn trying to become a mechanic — where do I start without going broke?

Question

I’m 20 years old and based in Brooklyn, NYC. I’ve been really wanting to get into the automotive field and become a mechanic, but I’m honestly feeling stuck on where to start.
I looked into UTI and Lincoln Tech, but the tuition is insanely expensive and I really don’t want to take on massive debt just to get my foot in the door.
I’m willing to work hard, start at the bottom, sweep floors, change oil — whatever it takes to learn the trade the right way.
A few questions I have:
Are trade schools actually worth it, or is starting as a shop helper/apprentice better?

Any affordable programs, community colleges, or certifications around NYC that you’d recommend?

Should I try to get hired at a shop first with zero experience?

What certifications should I focus on first (ASE, etc.)?

If anyone here started in NYC or came up through a similar path, I’d really appreciate hearing how you did it.
