what/how do they actually name themselves, is it often over objects but then there's no object names, is it both? or is it based off features?

theres some non-object names but like how are they named after that object, does lizard look like a lizard then? does scarlet look like a rock like a scarlet?? that would make less sense on a skywing, how do they name dragons
