WIBTA if I kept a shirt that my ex technically gave me?
Hello,
Around 10 years ago, I dated a guy that I was with for almost two years. At the very beginning of our relationship (literally first few weeks, genuinely didn’t even know we were dating yet), he came up to me and said “hey, my mom bought me this shirt. I don’t really like it. Do you want it?” It was a nice red flannel so I said okay and it has been one of my go-to shirts ever since.
I’m cleaning out my closet, which was very overdue, and for the first time, I had the thought that a potential future partner may be upset that I have this shirt if they heard my ex gave it to me. I really don’t want to get rid of it. This shirt has no emotional attachment to the relationship with it; I just think it’s a comfortable shirt that fits me well. It wasn’t even a gift as much as it was a pawn-off. I do have a friendly relationship with that ex, but we run in the same social circles so it’d be awkward if we didn’t, and I could imagine that the combo could come off in a way. I’d get it if it were jewelry or a bag or something nice, but there was no romance behind giving me the shirt, just convenience.
Is this one of those situations where it’s more “find yourself someone who won’t care about a shirt” or WIBTA if I kept it?
