A question from a casual fan

Hi all! I am a very casual figure skating and an aspiring writer. I want to write a story loosely based on a short documentary I saw about a Canadian figure skater. Basically, this skater trained and lived in Canada for her whole life/career until one season where she moved to Detroit to train with a new, better, coach. My question is: when in the season/off-season exactly would this decision to switch coaches happen? Immediately after the conclusion of her previous season? Would her past coaches advise this or be upset she left the? Sorry if this is a naive, clunky, and poorly worded question. I hope someone can understand what I am asking. Thanks in advance!
