Everyone has an opinion on this. Here's mine - plus one argument for the aisle seat that almost nobody talks about.

**Window seat**

You control the shade. Nobody climbs over you while you sleep. And if it's a night flight, you can wedge a travel pillow between your head and the wall where the seat ends - that's the closest thing to actually comfortable sleep in economy.

The view is also genuinely underrated. Coastlines, mountain ranges, cloud formations at 11,000 meters. I've watched sunrises from a window seat that were better than anything on the in-flight entertainment.

The downside is obvious - you're trapped. Every bathroom trip requires waking up your neighbor or doing an awkward sideways shuffle.

**Aisle seat**

You can stretch a leg into the aisle, stand up without negotiations, and move freely on long flights. The cart will bump your elbow occasionally. A passenger from the row across will sometimes invade your armrest space. That's the deal.

But here's the argument most people skip.

The WHO, as part of the WRIGHT study (over 10,000 participants, in collaboration with Leiden University), found that the risk of deep vein thrombosis doubles on flights over 4 hours. Window seat passengers had twice the risk compared to aisle passengers - simply because they move less. On flights over 6 hours, if you have any predisposition to circulation issues, this is a real medical consideration, not just comfort preference.

**Middle seat**

Objectively the worst option on long flights. Take it only if you're traveling with someone and want to sit together, or if there's genuinely nothing else left.

One exception: wide-body aircraft with 2-4-2 or 2-3-2 configurations. The middle-block aisle seats in those layouts are actually fine - you get aisle access without being in the main corridor traffic.

**A note on temperature**

Window seats tend to run slightly cooler - the fuselage loses heat at altitude. Aisle seats sometimes get more airflow from the overhead vents. If you run cold, grab a blanket from the crew. Problem solved either way.

**Quick guide**

* Want to sleep properly → window
* Long flight, 6+ hours, care about circulation → aisle
* Traveling as a pair, nothing else available → middle
* Wide-body plane with 2-4-2 layout → middle-block aisle seats are fine

**Window or aisle - and does your answer change depending on flight length?**

Window vs aisle vs middle seat - here's the case for each (including one most people ignore)
