Submitting a PDF vs Word doc — which is better

You have finished your paper. You need to submit it. You have to choose a file format.

Here is the answer.

PDF is almost always better.

Here is why.

Formatting stays the same. A Word doc looks different on different computers. Fonts change. Margins shift. Page breaks move. Your beautiful paper might look like garbage on your professor's screen. A PDF looks exactly the same everywhere.

Professors cannot accidentally edit your paper. In Word, a professor might click the wrong place and type over your words. In PDF, they can only comment. No accidental deletions.

PDFs are more professional. Every document you send in the real world will be a PDF. Get used to it now.

When should you use Word?

Only if the professor specifically asks for a Word doc. Some professors like to use Track Changes to comment. They cannot do that in a PDF.

Only if you are submitting to Turnitin through your learning management system. Some systems convert PDFs poorly. Check first.

How to make a PDF.

On a Mac, click File then Export as PDF.

On Windows, click File then Save As and choose PDF from the dropdown.

Google Docs: File then Download then PDF Document.

Pro tip. Name your file professionally. LastName_CourseNumber_AssignmentName.pdf Not final final FINAL 2.pdf

What is the worst file name you have ever used for a submitted paper? I once submitted ghfjkl.pdf and somehow still passed the class.
