Gasoline should be more expensive.
Gasoline is currently quite expensive by the mass consensus. I would argue though that gasoline should be inherently more expensive than it is valued currently.
According to many different sources we have enough oil to last us around 40-60 years. I would argue this makes oil very rare. Let’s thinks about what you need to make oil. A planet with organic life to even make it. And not just look we found a few microbes but actual thriving ecosystems. We know of exactly one which makes it less abundant than every precious metal in existence.
The supply that we do have has been accumulating for 3.5 billion years. We will have burned through it in less than two centuries.
On top of that around a quarter of the oil we use every year is for petrochemicals used for things we use consistently everyday in our lives. So even if we have no gas vehicles that extends supply to around 200-300 years just using everyday goods.
I understand that there is likely alternatives we will come up with for the current uses for oil down the road and that’s understandable. However, that doesn’t change the fact that the supply of one of the rarest substances in the universe is being priced very accessibly as if it is an everyday good. In fact one of the biggest hinderances to oil alternatives gaining dominance is the argument oil is cheaper but that is only because it is being priced massively incorrectly in the first place.
