Gutter replacement costs are wild… is it worth going cheap or investing upfront?

I didn’t realize how expensive gutters are… until I looked into replacing them 😬

If you’re in Australia and thinking about a full gutter replacement, the pricing is kind of all over the place. The rough range I kept seeing was about $30 to $160 per metre, which doesn’t sound terrible… until you multiply it by the size of your house.

For a small place, you might get away with under a couple grand. But once you’re dealing with a bigger home (or adding things like fascia and downpipes), it can easily climb into the $5k–$6k range. And that’s pretty normal, not “worst case.”

Biggest factor is the material you pick:

  • Cheap options like PVC are the most budget-friendly
  • Mid-range stuff like zincalume or aluminium seems to be the common choice
  • Then you’ve got stainless steel or copper, which look great but get pricey fast

It’s basically a trade-off between upfront cost vs how long you want it to last.

I also didn’t expect how much the type of gutter changes things. Some styles are simple and cheaper to install, while others (like box gutters or more decorative designs) need more labour and push the cost up.

Other stuff that affects the price:

  • Total gutter length (obviously)
  • Where you live (cities = higher labour costs)
  • Accessibility (multi-storey homes or awkward roofs cost more)
  • Extra components like fascia boards or downpipes

One interesting thing: prices actually vary a bit depending on the city. Places like Sydney and Melbourne tend to be on the higher end, while Adelaide and Brisbane can be slightly cheaper.

DIY is technically an option, but this feels like one of those jobs where it can go wrong pretty quickly if you don’t know what you’re doing. Working at height + making sure water drains properly = not exactly beginner-friendly.

Most advice I saw was:

  • Get multiple quotes (seriously, don’t skip this)
  • Make sure the quote actually breaks down everything
  • Check reviews/credentials before hiring anyone

Honestly, I used to think gutters were just a “set it and forget it” part of the house, but turns out replacing them is a pretty big job.

For anyone who’s done it—did you go cheap and replace again later, or spend more upfront for better materials?
